Pick the right Thatcham category
Different insurers require different categories. Not sure which yours wants? Call us — we'll tell you in two minutes.
CAT S7
GPS tracking with 24/7 SOC. The most-fitted category — accepted for most cars, vans, motorbikes and plant.
- GPS + GSM positioning
- 24/7 UK Secure Operating Centre
- Movement & ignition alerts
CAT S5
Adds Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR) — the tracker knows the difference between owner and thief.
- Everything in S7, plus ADR tag
- Multi-constellation GNSS + RF locator
- Required for many cars over £40k
CAT S5 Plus
Highest spec. Adds a motion-sensor that alerts even when the ignition is off — catches tow-away theft.
- Everything in S5
- Motion-sensor & tilt detection
- Required for the most valuable cars
How recovery works
- Alert. The vehicle moves without the driver tag (S5/S5+) or unexpectedly (S7). The tracker fires an alert to our Secure Operating Centre.
- Verify. SOC operators call you immediately. If you confirm theft (or can't be reached), we escalate.
- Locate. We supply live, accurate location to UK police, including the RF beacon for vehicles in containers or jammed.
- Recover. Local police effect the recovery. We stay on the line until the vehicle is back.

Thatcham tracker FAQs
Which Thatcham category does my insurance want?
Most UK policies that require a tracker specify either CAT S7 (GPS only) or CAT S5 (GPS + driver tag) — and S5 Plus for the highest-value vehicles. Your insurer's schedule will state the requirement; if you're not sure, call us with your policy reference and we'll confirm in two minutes.
Is the GTrak tracker accepted by my insurer?
Our trackers are Thatcham-certified and accepted by the major UK motor insurers including Aviva, Direct Line, Hiscox, Admiral, NFU Mutual, LV=, Adrian Flux, A-Plan and many specialist underwriters. If your insurer needs a specific document, just ask — we'll provide it.
How much does a Thatcham tracker cost?
Prices vary by category and subscription length. S7 is the lowest, S5 mid, S5 Plus the highest — typical subscription terms are 1, 3 or 5 years. Call or check the shop for current numbers — we won't hide pricing from you.
Will my insurance premium go down?
Often yes — particularly for high-value, classic or performance cars where a tracker is either required or strongly recommended. Some insurers offer 5-15% off premium for fitting a Thatcham-approved tracker.
Can I fit a Thatcham tracker myself?
No — Thatcham certification requires a qualified engineer to fit and seal the device, then issue the certificate. We have approved fitters across the UK.
Does the tracker work abroad?
Yes. The multi-network SIM operates in the UK, EU and most of the rest of the world. Tell us if you're taking the car overseas and we'll flag the SOC to expect roaming alerts.
